Hundreds of residents near a volcano in southern Chile that erupted spewing lava and ash fled their homes and spent the night in the open but authorities said on Wednesday that a massive evacuation was not yet necessary.
The director of the government's Emergency Bureau, said that a state of alert remained in the area of the Llaima volcano, 650 kilometres (400 miles) south of Santiago, but that no populated areas have been affected yet.
